A narrow oceanfront lot, filled with light. A double-height space at the ocean end draws daylight deep into the house, and the stair is placed to catch it rather than block it.
The site
Malibu Road lots are narrow, deep and closely bordered on both sides. The challenge was bringing daylight into the middle of the house without giving up the rooms that sit there.
The answer was to build up. A double-height space at the ocean end draws light deep into the house, and the stair is placed to catch it rather than block it. Bedrooms are upstairs, where the view clears the neighboring roofs; the ground floor holds the rooms that are best close to the sand.
On the beach, materials are chosen for the salt air as much as for their look.

Set inside the tall space rather than against a side wall, so light reaches the middle of the house.
The upper floor rises above the neighboring roofs, where the view is.
